Make homophone practice more engaging with this Homophones Card Game featuring 80 sentence-based cards that help students choose the correct homophone using context clues. Instead of simply matching words that sound alike, students read a sentence, decide which homophone correctly completes it, and continue playing while practicing commonly confused words.
This colorful, low-prep Homophones Game combines grammar and vocabulary practice with a familiar card game format. It's perfect for 2nd, 3rd, and 4th grade ELA, ESL/ELL learners, literacy centers, small groups, partner practice, intervention, early finishers, and grammar review.

How to Play
Students play using a familiar color-and-number matching card game format. Before playing a sentence card, the student reads the sentence aloud and chooses the correct homophone to complete it.
- Students match a card by color, number, or action.
- Before placing a sentence card, the student reads the sentence aloud.
- The student chooses the correct homophone using the sentence context.
- If the answer is correct, the card can be played.
- Action cards such as Draw Two, Reverse, Skip, and Wild keep the game moving.
- The first player to use all of their cards wins.
Why Context-Based Homophone Practice?
Homophones sound the same, so students cannot rely on pronunciation alone to choose the correct word. These cards require students to use sentence meaning, spelling, and context clues to determine which homophone belongs in each sentence.
This makes the activity especially useful for helping students move beyond simply memorizing homophone pairs and begin using commonly confused words correctly in context.
